About the Contributor(s) Mike Berenstain

Stan and Jan Berenstain introduced the first Berenstain Bears books in 1962. Mike Berenstain grew up watching his parents work together to write about and draw these lovable bears. Eventually he started drawing and writing about them too. Though Stan died in 2005 and Jan in 2012, Mike continues to create the delightful Bear adventures from his studio in Pennsylvania, in an area that looks much like the sunny dirt road deep in Bear Country.

Such a fun book, a look back in time, really. A harvest festival attended by the Bear Family, with fun activities. Hayrides, an apple picking contest, picking pumpkins in the pumpkin patch, all fun, wrapped up with a yummy Harvest feast. Brother and Sister Bear had a fun time and at the back of the book, they have included activities and questions for you to have fun too. Beautifully illustrated, this story is a story that will touch your heart as you reminisce about fun harvest festivals you have attended. 4.5 stars from this reviewer. Around here the weather has started to have a crispness to it and the leaves are just beginning to hint at the colors to come. With these changes come the many fall festivals that we love to attend as a family.

Our family isn't the only one that loves a good harvest festival. The residents of Bear Country are eagerly anticipating the first ever Chapel in the Woods Harvest Festival at Farmer Ben's farm. We meet up with the Berenstain Bear family as Mama and Papa are readying their yard for a winter's rest. Papa mentions the Harvest Festival and the whole family decides to attend.

Along the way it is mentioned that "mother nature puts on her best clothes and dishes up her finest food." At first this little phrase made me cringe. But in the next pages the following exchange takes place between the Bear family:

"Would you say mother nature is putting on a good show for us?" said Brother, kicking up a drift of leaves.
"Well," said Mama, pointing to the heavens, "you know mother nature works for someone a bit higher up."
"Yes," agreed Papa. "And harvest time is about much more than just enjoying the season. It is a time to give thanks to God for all his blessings--for the food that grows in his good, rich earth and for the wonders of nature that he has created." (pg. 10)

I appreciated the follow-up that pointed out the true Creator. I'm still not thrilled with the "mother nature" reference but not enough to pass on the book.

Once the Bear family arrives at Farmer Ben's they participate in apple picking and pumpkin picking and then a hay ride. At the end of the day there is a feast for the entire community where Preacher Brown gives a wonderful prayer about celebrating the Festival of Harvest with the firstfruits of the crops that have been sown.

This newest Berenstain Bears' book is a good one to add to your family library for fall reading.

The Berenstain Bears books are instant classics, as far as I am concerned. These are books that I grew up reading and the new books in the collection (even though they are written by Mike Berenstain rather than Stan and Jan Berenstain), keep in line with the Berenstain legacy. The Berenstain Bears books are books that exemplify moral character, and I appreciate that.

The Berenstain Bears Harvest Festival is the newest of The Berenstain Bears books.

In The Berenstain Bears Harvest Festival, the bears go to Farmer Ben's farm for a harvest festival. They pick apples, pick pumpkins, and go on a hay ride. Through it all, the focus is on giving thanks to God for food and nature.

The Berenstain Bears Harvest Festival is another great addition to The Berenstain Bears books...and a great addition to any family bookshelf.

Thank you Zondervan for sending me this free book in exchange for an honest review. I was not paid for this review and all opinions are 100% mine.

I am in denial that it is September and the leaves will be changing colors and summer weather will be leaving. However, I can get excited about carving pumpkins and making homemade applesauce. Our church also helps out with a big community trunk or treat event so this book fits right in with getting our children excited about dressing up and having some fun with the community.

At the end of this book there is a section of activities and questions you can ask your kids. I love this section as it is a great avenue for discussions and actions after the discussions. In this one we talked about our local farmers market that we have visited a few times as well as the Gifts God has given to us. As the seasons change it is always a good reminder to be thankful and praising God for the gifts he gives us. (Posted on 9/8/2015)

Yesterday I wrote about The Berenstain Bears Storybook Bible for Little Ones and today I have another fun title from The Berenstain Bears: Harvest Festival.

Fall is my favorite season and I can already see the light beginning to change bringing the promise of the season! What better way to get in the mood that to settle in for story time with our favorite bears!

The book begins with one of those things that always makes me think of fall and my childhood in New Hampshire: raking leaves and then jumping in the pile! I love that the harvest festival the bears attend involves many of my favorite things about fall including pumpkin pie, apple picking, visiting the pumpkin patch and a good old fashioned hayride.

This book is chalk full of all the wonders of the season and while reading to my children, they recalled some of our own experiences with these same activities. Most people when asked will say that Christmas is their favorite holiday season but not in my house! We're about to enter my favorite!

The end of the book has activities and questions from Brother and Sister Bear. I like to ask my kids these questions to make sure they were listening and to hear the way that they interpret things. In first and second grade they both have nightly required reading so this was a perfect book to read as well as to check their understanding of what it was about.

The Berenstain Bears: Harvest Festival will get you in the mood for fall. It can't come soon enough for me but the book is already here! (Posted on 8/27/2015)

“The Berenstain Bears’ Harvest Festival” was sent to me by Zonderkids, a division of Zondervan Publishing, free of charge, in exchange for my honest review.
“The Berenstain Bears’ Harvest Festival” is a children’s fiction book, written by Mike Berenstain. He also drew the adorable pictures – patterned after the creations of his parents, Stan and Jan Berenstain. The first Berenstain Bear book was introduced in 1962. I think it is so cool that a series I read as a child, and read to my children, is being continued into my grandchildren’s generation.
This book was about autumn. As it talked about the leaves and the animals, picking apples and pumpkins, and going on a hayride, it didn’t forget to show that autumn is also a time to thank God for His bountiful blessings. I also like how, at the end of his books, Mike includes a few questions to talk about and a couple of activities. In this one, it’s to plant a garden, and to visit a farmers’ market.
I’d recommend this book to young readers and to those who read to them.
