I love Mary Engelbreit. Her vintage style illustrations speak of a simpler time, but they are colorful and classic and usually feature quotes that remind the reader of the things that are truly important. This Treasury which focuses on friendship is no exception. Besides the Bible, quotes featured in this Treasury come from sources like Oscar Wilde, Henry David Thoreau, William Butler Yates, and many others. The illustrations all feature different representations of friendship- children with each other, with their stuffed animals, and with their pets, as well as adult ladies with their lifelong "besties". It's a beautiful, hard-covered book with dust jacket, and would make a lovely gift for the friends in your life. (Review copy provided by Zondervan. Opinions expressed belong solely to me.) The Blessings of Friendship Treasury by Mary Engelbreit is a sweet, beautifully illustrated book about friendship.

Now - just so my review comes across with proper background: I do enjoy Mary Engelbreit's illustrations but I am not one of her big fans with her decorations and art all over my home. (Actually, this book is the first Mary Engelbreit thing I own, I believe.) Also, I have never really understood the idea of friendship books. I love my friends, but I have never thought about buying a book about friendship for one of them.

With that being said, I truly enjoyed this book. I really enjoyed the variety of quotes in The Blessings of Friendship Treasury. There is a good mix of short and long quotes, and I also am appreciative of the Bible quotes that were included. (It even has "Hug O' War" by Shel Silverstein.)

On the back of the dust jacket, The Blessings of Friendship Treasury is referenced as a Juvenile Nonfiction book for ages 4-8. I am not sure I agree with the classification, but that doesn't change the fact that I enjoyed this book. I did feel that the content of this book would be more appreciated by adults (and perhaps some older children), but the illustrations will surely be enjoyed by any age.

Obviously, this book is by Mary Engelbreit...so the illustrations are fantastic. There are so many pages that would make a great framed piece of art - it may be worth getting an extra copy just to cut up and frame.

I would have liked to see a bit more diversity in the illustrations in regard to ethnicities (and physical conditions). Out of the people depicted in the illustrations throughout the book, 90% are white while only 10% are other ethnicities (mostly black). (That does not include the front cover illustration.) For those who may be curious, there are some males depicted, but the majority of the people in the illustrations are female (at least 80%). There is one illustration with a girl in a wheelchair.

Overall, this is a fantastic book and would be great as gifts for friends - both as a book and as individual framed pieces of art.

My Review:

A sweet, simple treasury of poems and quotes all centered around the gifts and blessings of friendship. Some Bible verses are also included to round out the precious sentiments the author wishes to express. And in Mary Engelbreit fashion, the illustrations are so timeless&endearing, you can't help but smile as you turn each page.

The poem, Make New Friends is my favorite one from the book. Simply because of this passage:

"You have one hand, I have the other. Put them together, we have each other." Its listed as a children's book and is possibly the sweetest, most darling book to read to children. But I didn't want my boys touching it because it was simply too perfect and whimsical to leave in their hands. This book is a perfect coffee table book sure to delight any company, you may have over to your home.

**Disclosure** This book was sent to me free of charge for my honest review from the publisher. (Posted on 7/22/14)

This book is a compilation of many works that talk about being a nice friend. When I read it with my children I was able to stop on many pages and discuss the true meaning of some of the mini stories. This is a book that will require young minds to do some deeper level thinking while learning how to be a great friend. I disagree that this book is for ages 4-8 because I believe many four year old's are a bit young for some of the pages and would recommend 6-10.

The artwork is very well cultured and very calm coloring. I understand how the author has studied her mothers old children's books and got inspiration from the artwork from them. The outfits the children are wearing are older and nothing screams current or trendy but rather classical and simple.
