Stan and Jan Berenstain introduced the first Berenstain Bear books in 1962. Mike Berenstain grew up watching his parents work together to write about and draw these lovable bears. Eventually he started drawing and writing about them too. Though Stan died in 2005, and Jan in 2012, Mike continues to create the delightful Bear adventures from the family home and studio in Pennsylvania, in an area that looks much like the sunny dirt road deep in Bear Country.

In The Berenstain Bears: The Very First Christmas, Papa Bear reads the story of the very first Christmas to the bear cubs. After the introductory page where it shows the bear family getting ready to read, it is just the story of the first Christmas - illustrated in true Berenstain style. (There isn't even a closing where we come back to the bear family. The story just ends.)
On the inside of the back cover, there are questions and activity suggestions for those who would like to take it farther than just reading the book.
All in all, I think The Berenstain Bears: The Very First Christmas is a nice addition to The Berenstain Bears books...and a great book to share with young children to help celebrate Christmas.

They teach great values for children and families in general. Now we have a Christmas book of theirs to add to our already growing collection.

“The Very First Christmas” is a Berenstain Bears book, written and illustrated by Jan and Mike Berenstain…the son and wife of Stan Berenstain, who did the original Berenstain Bears. I love how I can carry on a series of books read to me and that I read to my children to now read to my grandchildren.
In “The Very First Christmas” the Berenstains explain the story of Jesus’ birth in a fun way, easy for a child to understand. Of course, all of the characters are bears, as in all of their books.
I also like how, at the end of each of their books, they have a couple questions to think and talk about. He also has a couple of activities that have to do with the particular book you’re reading. In this one he suggests making a diorama of the first Christmas and making cards to give to neighbors and friends.
I’ve always liked the Berenstain Bears and would recommend this book to children and those reading to them.

Here's what I really liked about this book. It was the story of Christmas re-told and illustrated as bears. There was no spin on it, no changing it up and no re-arranging the story. The only difference was that the characters were all of the bears instead of people.
I really liked this traditional and unexpected story of Christmas because I was expecting something different. Sometimes it's nice to just get the truth without embellishment. The bears of course make the pictures funner for the kids, especially my youngest. But it's a great way for them to get the Christmas message as it should be told.
The Berenstain Bears The Very First Christmas is the story straight from the Bible, as it should be! (Posted on 11/2/2015)

This book is beautifully written and illustrated. It shouldn't surprise me, every Berenstain Bears book I've ever read was incredible. I love how they told the story just the way it is written, and in a way that children can understand it. I think that it is important to instill in our children the true meaning of Christmas, and this book does just that. I recommend parents to read this to their children to show them, Christmas is more than Santa and gifts.
