Once again I get the pleasure of reviewing another new Bible edition put out by Zondervan Publishing. The unique thing about reviewing a Bible, I suppose, is that the review in no way deals with the actual content of the resource. Well, most of the content at least. Most Bibles, in addition to the content of the actual word of God, contain further content and features such as commentary, book introductions, cross-references and the like, but not the Reader's Bible. This NIV Reader's Bible has been stripped down to contain only God's word – no commentary and no real notes of any kind, just the text itself. So, this review will deal primarily with the perceived effectiveness of this version and the aesthetics and quality of the Bible.

I think the heart behind producing a Bible such as this one is to create a resource that more closely resembles what the early readers of the text would have encountered and I'm sure that Zondervan has accomplished this to a degree. Not only have they stripped away any commentary, but they've also removed section headings, pulled out verse references/numberings, and minimized the degree to which the reader can visually see the chapter breaks. But, if I can be honest, my experience with reading/studying this NIV Reader's Bible really hasn't been all that different from what I experience reading a Bible which contains more notes and commentary, section headings, and more traditional chapter and verse markings. That's not to say that this isn't a valuable Bible version or that it wouldn't be a help to other readers, but it didn't actually change much about the way that I interact with the Scriptures.

That said, the "construction" of this Bible is of a high quality. The binding is strong, unlike many other flimsy cloth-over-board Bibles which I've owned in the past. The size of the text is adequate, the visual appeal of the Bible itself is pleasing both inside and out, and the overall size of it is right – not overly bulky, nor too small. It's a beautifully made Bible.

The real value in utilizing the NIV Reader's Bible is that you have the opportunity to interact with the text yourself without having to filter through the voice of a commentary, as helpful as that may be from time to time. I'm excited to continue using this version for that reason and I'm sure it'll prove to be fruitful as I spend more time in it.  (Posted on 10/19/2017)
