Gabrielle Douglas is a two-time Olympic gold medalist. At the 2012 Summer Olympics, she made history, becoming the first US gymnast to take home a team and an individual gold medal in the same Olympics. Gabrielle began her training at age six, and became the Virginia State Champion only two years later. When she was fourteen, she left her family in Virginia Beach to train with coach Liang Chow in Des Moines, Iowa. Under Chow’s guidance, and with tremendous faith in God’s plan for her, Gabrielle competed in the Olympic Trials and walked away with the only guaranteed spot on the team. Since her Olympic triumph, Gabrielle has used her platform to inspire millions with a powerful message: With hard work and persistence, any dream is possible. Michelle Burford is a Harvard-trained journalist in Manhattan and a founding editor of O, The Oprah Magazine. Though she has visited nearly three dozen countries on six continents and interviewed scores of folks along the way, she’d never once even attempted a cartwheel until the day she watched Gabby claim the Olympic gold medal. One month and two enormous bumps on the forehead later, Michelle teamed up with Gabby to bring you the story behind the story. - Review by The IE Mommy
Since the whole book is wonderfully illustrated with pictures from Gabrielle's life, I was able to go through it with Paige even though she's just four. There is a picture of Gabrielle close to Paige's age when she started gymnastics so I talked to her about how she got her start when she was just a little girl.
Paige's eyes were huge with wonder while I talked to her about the olympics and explained what it meant and how she could grow up to do that someday. I want my kids to dream big and aim high and Gabrielle Douglas is such an amazing example of that and she does it all with grace, humility and most importantly, her faith.
This book is actually not designed for four year olds as you might have guessed. I just really enjoyed sharing it with mine since she has a love of gymnastics. This book would be perfect for adolescent girls who need to get that same message that my little one is getting of encouragement, faith, affirmation and dreaming big no matter what life serves your way.
The book is filled with lots of things that tweens and teens will relate to like the hash tags that dominate our social media. The book is broken down so that it can be easily read just a few minutes at a time as you have time. It chronicles her journey and her ups and downs and everything in between.
If you have a daughter that's a gymnastics fan, this would be such an amazing gift for her! Grace, Gold and Glory shows what a beautiful shining example of God's grace and love that Gabrielle is in our dark world today!
