Memories with Dad
Cheeseburgers and chocolate shakes—that’s one thing author Cindy Morgan loved to share with her dad when she was growing up. Her favorite memories of him are of everyday moments, whether coloring together, washing the dishes or watching a movie. Now as an adult, she sees how the time and attention he gave her really taught her about being a good parent someday. Cindy celebrates the father-daughter relationship in Dance Me, Daddy and in the song “King of the World” (which she wrote for Point of Grace) by describing one girl’s lifelong dance with her dad.
Music is a wonderful medium for fathers to share with their children. Sing together to a CD. Make your own music with pots and pans and wooden spoons. Sign the family up to sing with the church choir. Play musical games or ask your older children to teach you their favorite dance moves. They’ll remember these moments for years.
Father’s Day Food Fun!
On Father’s Day weekend plan a fun interactive meal for Dad and kids. No rules. Plenty of napkins. And lots of creativity. Check out our mealtime ideas:
Fruit salad people—cut a variety of fruits and veggies into finger- and hand-sized pieces. Give each person a salad plate upon which to make a character out of the salad items. For example, use half a pear or lettuce leaf for a body, carrot sticks for arms or legs, raisins for eyes, sprouts for hair… Mayonnaise or a light cake frosting can be used as an edible adhesive to attach the different body parts.
Mashed potato creations—Spoon two big scoops of thick mashed potatoes onto each person’s plate. Give them a fork, spoon, butter knife, measuring cups and/or cookie cutters as shaping tools. Need some suggestions? How about a castle, car, boat or dog?
French fry sculptures—(similar to TINKERTOYS) With toothpicks, connect French fries into small structures, such as houses or forts, and create a village on your patio table.
Make-your-own sundaes—finish off your meal by setting out a variety of toppings for ice cream (fruit, sauces, whip cream, sprinkles, crushed candies). Let everyone make an original creation.
