    Art Source 3.0

This software is compatible with Windows® 98, 2000, ME, XP and Windows NT®. It is also compatible with MacOS 8.6 through 9.2 (compatible with Classic running in MacOS X).

    Q. How can I tell if my computer meets the system requirements for this software?

    A. PC: There are several things you can tell by right-clicking the My Computer icon on your desktop and choosing Properties from the menu that pops up. The resulting screen will show you what kind of computer you have, which version of Windows you are running, and how much RAM you have installed.

If you double-click My Computer, then right-click on the drive you would like to install the software on and finally choose Properties, the resulting screen will tell you if you have enough hard drive space available.

Mac: By going to the Apple menu and choosing About this Computer, you will see the operating system (OS) that your computer is running, as well as how much memory is installed. Other information is also available.

    Q. How do I start the program?  All I see is the logo on the screen that comes up.
    A.
There are buttons at the bottom of that screen that you cannot see.  There are three possible solutions for this:
    1.  Click on the title bar of the window and drag the window up.
    2.  Change your task bar settings. To do so, right-click on your task bar and choose Properties. Uncheck the box that Keep the Taskbar on top of other windows.
    3.  Change your screen resolution to 1024x768.  Right click on your desktop and choose Properties.  Click on the settings tab and change the screen resolution here.

    Q. Why can't I see the bottom of the Window?

    A. If you have your screen resolution set to 1024 x 768, you will be able to see the entire window. If you have it set to 800 x 600, you will not be able to see the bottom of the window unless you change your task bar settings. To do so, right-click on your task bar and choose Properties. Uncheck the box that says Keep the Taskbar on top of other windows.

    Q. Can I add text to an image?

    A. If you have a photo editing program installed on your computer, it is possible. If you need assistance doing this, please refer to the Help system of your installed program. Please note that you cannot edit images in a word processing program like Microsoft Word or Word Perfect.

    Q. Can I change the background of an image from white to transparent or another color?

    A. In versions 1 and 2 of this software, we used the TIF format to ensure all images were viewable on both Macintosh and Windows compatible computers. In version 3, we converted the TIFs to JPG format because that seems to have become a standard file format. Unfortunately, we overlooked the transparency feature that was available in the TIF format while preparing files for version 3.

There is a relatively simple work-around with Photoshop. To do this, open the appropriate JPG and go to the Image menu, select Mode, and select Bitmap. A dialog box will appear to confirm Resolution and Method. The resolution you can change if preferred and the Method should be set to Pattern Dither. Click OK. Then, do a Save As and select the TIF file format in the menu below the file name. Click Save. A dialog box will pop up asking you to select a compression method. Click OK.

When it is resaved, you should be able to import it into InDesign, PageMaker or QuarkXpress with the background transparent as required.

    Q. How do I search for a specific image?

    A. Refer to the Getting Started section of the program and you will find information on how to use the Find feature within Extensis Portfolio. If you want to open the image directly from the CD-ROM, you can find all images in the Images folder.

    Q. Can I install ArtSource 3.0 to my hard drive?

    A. You can copy the catalog and the Portfolio Browser program folder to your hard drive to view the thumbnails and search the catalog. However, to copy images or preview them, the CD-ROM must remain in the CD-ROM drive. The catalog will still read all image files from the CD-ROM, but searching the catalog by keyword will be much faster if the Portfolio Browser and catalog are copied to your hard drive.

To copy the catalog and program to your hard drive, make sure you have approximately 75 MB of available hard drive space. Then, simply navigate to your CD-ROM drive and select ArtSource3.fdb and the Portfolio Browser folder. (Before selecting these files, Windows users must explore the CD-ROM by right-clicking the CD-ROM drive from within My Computer and selecting Explore.)

On Windows, right-click and select Copy. Navigate to a location on your hard drive where you would like to copy these files. Right-click in that location and select Paste.

On Macintosh, simply drag the selected files to a location on your hard drive where you'd like these files installed and let up on the mouse button. The files will automatically begin to copy.

Then, double-click on ArtSource3.fdb and the catalog will open.

Note: You can copy all images to your hard drive, but the catalog always accesses them through the path to your CD-ROM drive. If you plan on accessing them through other programs, please follow the directions above to copy the Images folder from your CD-ROM. Also, please keep in mind that the images will take up approximately 415 MB of available hard drive space.

    Q. How do I keep the Start screen from appearing every time I put the CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive?

    A. Simply hold down the shift key as you close the drive. Do not let up for about 30 seconds or wait until you hear your drive stop spinning.

    Q. When I preview the GIF files, I can't see them move. What's wrong?

    A. Check to make sure you have QuickTime 4.1.1 or newer installed on your computer. If not, download it.  http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/  Once you've installed it, restart your computer and try again. You will see the GIF files animated in the preview.

    Q. How do I insert the animated GIFs into my document?

    A. You can plug Art Parts Web Parts into your webpage by using webpage creation software (such as Microsoft FrontPage or Adobe PageMill). Please refer to the user's manual of your webpage creation software for instructions on how to "Place" or "Insert" a GIF file. Don't forget: There are two file versions supplied for each animation—one for use on light backgrounds, and one for use on dark (dark background file names start with a "d").

    Q. Why am I getting an error message that I do not have permission to install the free font, THUD?

    A. There is a problem with the file name. Please read the CD in Windows Explorer and copy the THUD files to your desktop. You can install them from there into your Fonts. We apologize for the inconvenience.

    Q. How do I register this software?

    A. You can register here online.

    Q. My question hasn’t been answered. Now what?

    A. Please click here technical support form and choose Software Technical Support from the first drop down menu.
