Free Resources
Dear Fellow Christ-follower,

Complementing the resource, Introduction to Christian Education and Formation: A Lifelong Plan for Christ-Centered Restoration (ICEF), we are pleased to provide three additional, electronic helps: 300 PowerPoint slides 50 Page student workbook 250 pages of appendices for illustrations, discussion, etc.

There are several ways these supplements might be used in the classroom:

The 300 PowerPoint slides (Slide Set 1, Slide Set 2, and Slide Set 3) are very thorough; they are divided into three sections, according to ICEF’s three Parts. The PowerPoints could complement class lectures through traditional uses, featuring the content of every chapter or only that of a couple specified chapters. If an objective exam of the textbook is designed, here is one practical strategy to help students prepare for the test: from the PowerPoint, create an e-version or paper “master” of the chapters assigned for the test, by putting six slides on one page. The master could then be duplexed and disseminated to the class or put on library reserve.

The 50-page student workbook, called Personal Responses (PDF), offers a handful of questions for all nineteen chapters. These questions are quite diverse and range from a detailed Bible study to issues pertaining to a real-to-life case study of a local church; and from reviews of specific chapter material to individual reflections and reactions to life application questions. So, there are many educational possibilities, including:
  1. Individual student use—this workbook could be completed and turned in weekly or at the end of the course. It could be customized to look more like a journal or it could provide extra credit.
  2. Small group use—Create small groups (three to four students each), and follow the procedure above, employing a multiple response or a consensus response design for the small group members. These groups may also serve as an accountability group for other course tasks, prayer, and so forth.
  3. Class use—All students may come to class having prepared personal responses to specific questions or a spontaneous class assignment may be given—such as a Bible study—to augment the curriculum objectives for that day.

The 250 pages of Appendices (PDF) provide a totally different kind of classroom help, as every ICEF chapter has at least one appendix assigned to it. A complete list of those appendices is found in the front of the ICEF textbook, under “Additional Resources.” The specific purpose of the appendices is to highlight at least one particular component of the chapter to which it belongs. These appendices also feature wide sets of resources: from a complete and annotated website directory of all five global tasks, analyzed at the end of the textbook to a full textbook bibliography to a provocative reflection upon “Higher Education as Spiritual Formation: The Creation Mandate.” Furthermore, the genre of these individual chapter appendices range from modern-day parables to anecdotes and from Bible studies on pertinent themes and doctrines to related research in the social sciences.

In sum, these three supplemental electronic categories aim to strengthen your contributions in the classroom.

An Invitation
As the author of this Introduction, along with the Zondervan team, we view our partnership as a meaningful journey together, where each provides and receives significant contributions. In the future we hope to update these multi-faceted resources for you (both the textbook and these supplements).

To strengthen these resources, we invite you to partner with us. Your contributions to this on-going project are greatly needed, as you provide feedback from actual Christian education settings. We are honored by your input in these particular areas:
  1. How have these resources been useful in your ministry and why?
  2. What has not been as helpful and why?
  3. What other ideas (for the textbook or supplements) do you suggest? A brief explanation would be helpful.

Along with your comments, please tell us something about yourself and the group you serve. Thank you for your faithful commitment to our Lord and to His Kingdom.

Sincerely,

Ronald T. Habermas
