The "e" in ebook means "electronic," just like the "e" in email. Like email, the benefit of an electronic book is its portability. Imagine you're sitting in an airport, waiting at the gate because your flight has been delayed. You're getting very bored, so you look for something to read. Specifically, the file will have some amount of DRM, which stands for digital rights management. Sony (Reader Digital Book) and Amazon (Kindle) have developed their own portable readers. In addition, most desktop computers, laptop computers, PDAs, and smartphones are suited for running ebook reader software.

Be sure to check the system requirements for the reader program when you download the program. Not all reader programs have the same system requirements, so make sure you choose the proper program, the proper ebook format for the reader you chose, and a device that can run the program you chose. All three must match for the ebook to function properly.

Keep in mind that the different ebook formats are not compatible with each other. This is why it is important that you make sure your ebook format, your reader program, and your device match up.
