Grand Rapids, Mich., Dec. 3, 2009 – When blogger and author Jon Acuff raised $30,000 to build a kindergarten in Vietnam in less than 18 hours, he decided to double his goal. Twenty-four days later, the readers of the satirical blog, Stuff Christians Like, reached the $60,000 goal and raised enough money to build two kindergartens.
Acuff partnered with Samaritan’s Purse, a Christian nonprofit organization, to raise the money and oversee the construction of the kindergartens in the Hoang Then village in the Northwest section of Vietnam. Over 400 children at the bottom of the social scale in Vietnam will be able to attend these schools free of charge. The educational programming will include hygiene, sanitation and nutrition.
According to Darren Mullenix, Director of Operations and Donor Ministries for Samaritan’s Purse, “[we are] amazed and gratified by the success that Jon has had with his fundraising efforts. His readership responded beyond our wildest dreams.”
Acuff used his blog, twitter and facebook accounts to encourage readers to donate. Readers followed their progress through updates on stuffchristianslike.net. Reader’s donations ranged from $5 to $6,023.
Acuff told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution he wanted to do more on his blog than make people laugh, “when he was looking at a book with his then 5-year-old daughter, Laura Elizabeth, earlier this year. She saw a picture of a starving child and turned to her dad with a heart-rending question, ‘That's not real, is it?’”
Acuff’s first book, fittingly titled Stuff Christians Like, releases in April 2010 and contains 65 percent original content and 35 percent classic stuffchristianslike.net entries.
About Stuff Christians Like
On a whim, Jon Acuff started a satirical blog called stuffchristianslike.net. Acuff hoped this reaction to the popular site Stuff White People Like would start dialog about how silly it is to slap a God-spin on popular secular ideas.
Since the blog started in March 2008, it has had over 5 million page views with over half a million pages views in November alone. Over 900,000 unique visitors from 210 countries (98 percent of the world) have visited the blog and left over 58,000 comments.
Out of 112 million blogs in the world, Stuff Christians Like is ranked #582.
About Jon Acuff
Jon Acuff is the comedic genius behind the hit blog Stuff Christians Like which explores the funny things Christians do – including their love for side hugs, crock pots and metrosexual worship leaders. Now, this pastor's kid, with a mind for branding, a sarcastic mouth and a heart for God is challenging how we laugh about faith in a new book. Acuff is a copy writer and blogger and lives in Atlanta, with his wife and two daughters.
