Zondervan - Lauretta & Ben Patterson

Ben Patterson is the chaplain at Westmont College. He served in the pastorate for nearly 25 years and is the author of Waiting, He Has Made Me Glad, is a regular contributor to Leadership, and is the editor of Zondervan’s Prayer Devotional Bible.

Lauretta Patterson has partnered for 38 years in marriage, family, and ministry with her husband Ben. Through many life seasons and multiple moves, she has found prayer and laughter to be the surest way to cope with disconcerting change. She loves to teach, and often can be found discipling small groups of students on campus, leading women in Bible studies, or opening the door wide to friends and guests.

Taking the Long View: Sustaining Hope for the Pastor's Family ( Lauretta Patterson)
Wednesday, February 11, 2009, 1:30pm-3:00pm, Royal Palm Salons 5&6
Every season in a pastor's family has its peculiar challenges, and some of them are downright demoralizing! How can we as pastors' families grab hold of Hope to know that we indeed do have hope and a future? What are the truths that we must cling to be faithful stewards over the long haul? How can prayer be the source of real-life encouragement in the trenches of child rearing? Are there habits of life that will help us to “go the distance”? Join us as we remind each other of our calling, as we encourage each other in the Word, and as we honestly share tales of Christ's sustaining presence in the hard times and the glad times.

God's Prayer Book: The Pleasure and Power of Praying the Psalms ( Ben Patterson)
Wednesday, February 11, 2009, 1:30pm-3:00pm, Esquire
How odd -- and wonderful -- that in the center of the Bible, God's word to us, is a book of prayers, words we speak to God. For in the psalms God has graciously condescended to teach us the language he loves to hear from us when we pray. Learning to pray is indeed like learning a language and a culture, and in the psalms we learn to believe and pray in the language and culture of the family of God, with the likes of David, Asaph, Moses and supremely our Lord Jesus. This seminar will offer helpful perspectives and practices on how prayer may be learned in the Book of Psalms.

Morning Bible Study ( Ben Patterson)
Thursday, February 12, 2009, 7:30am-8:15am, Golden Ballroom

Muscular Faith ( Ben Patterson)
Thursday, February 12, 2009, 8:30am-10:00am, Garden Salon 2
A strong theme in Scripture describes the Christian life as a muscular exercise, a struggle to fight the good fight, finish the race, keep the faith, and win the crown. Is this outlook only for the spiritually elite, or for all who follow Christ? This seminar will make the case for the need to return to this perspective on faith as the norm for all Christians, and to repent of the therapeutic spiritualities that are so congenial to our culture.
