Spiritual Disciplines: Instrument for Spirituality?

The turn to spiritual disciplines, especially fasting, is distorting what spiritual disciplines are designed to accomplish. By examining what the Bible says about fasting, we aim to show that when we focus on what we can get from fasting we distort the discipline. Instead of seeing fasting as an instrument to grow in spirituality, we will examine how fasting is primarily a response to severe conditions.
