The Church as Agent of Cultural Renewal
We often think of culture as happening "out there" beyond the church's reach. But in fact your church has deep resources in becoming a source of creative renewal in your community and in our society at large. Who are the potential untapped "culture makers" in your congregation? What kind of pastoring and leadership do they need? How can an emphasis on cultural calling actually strengthen the life of the Christian community as well? We will explore both the theological foundations and the practical elements of Christian culture making.
How Green is God?
American Christians are waking up to their responsibility for caring for creation. Yet calls for Christian environmental responsibility have been met by serious questions of politics, economics, and theology. Why do we find it difficult to be Christian environmentalists? Is there a distinctly Christian way to care for creation that avoids both "worshipping nature" and dismissing the world by saying, "It's all going to burn"? This workshop will probe both current controversies in conservation, energy, and climate change and several models of churches that have discovered that Christian stewardship is actually very good news.
