When am I excerpting enough material to need permission?

A permission request is not required by Zondervan if you're quoting or reproducing up to 500 words from any Zondervan publication. Please see more detail under the "Permission Guidelines" tab. If your request falls within these guidelines, the following copyright notice must accompany all reprints: “Taken from (Name of Book) by (Author). Copyright © (Date) by (Copyright Holder). Used by permission of Zondervan, www.zondervan.com.”

Can I call Zondervan to get verbal permission for my request?

No. For legal purposes, all requests must be submitted in writing, please fill out the permission request form.

How much of a book am I allowed to reprint/photocopy?

Zondervan will not allow any more than 10% of any in-print book to be copied or reprinted in any way. Permission is required from Zondervan to copy material up to that amount. Requests that exceed this amount will not be granted. Please complete a permission request form to obtain permission to make photocopies of up to 10% of an in-print book.

What are the standard fees for copyright permission?

Fees are determined based on the amount of material being used, the distribution of that material, and whether your usage is defined as commercial or non-commercial. Our fees are established to compensate our authors fairly for further use of their copyrighted material.

Can I make copies of the “Spiritual Gifts Assessment” or other assessments from the Network materials by Bruce Bugbee, Don Cousins, and Bill Hybels?

Yes. Zondervan is able to grant permission for the individual assessments within the Network material. Payment is required for use of the material at a rate of $2.00 per copy/per assessment. A permission request form must be submitted to Zondervan for this usage.

[/\]

Am I allowed to make a copy of a DVD?

No. Out of fairness to our authors, Zondervan does not grant permission to make copies of DVD's that are in print.

What if the book I want to use is in the public domain?

If the date on the copyright line of the book you wish to use reads 1922 or earlier and the book was published in the United States, you don't need permission to use the material because the copyright has expired. Please keep in mind that using an author's exact words without attribution can constitute plagiarism, even if the material is in the public domain. Therefore, it is always necessary to cite the source of the material. If the work or any portion was copyrighted prior to January 1, 1978, an application for the renewal of said copyright must be made at the expiration of the first term of 28 years. Works published in 1978 or after will be protected for the lifetime of the author plus 70 years.
